This field course will focus on the tectonic evolution of the Cabo Frio Terrane (Heilbron et al. 2000a, 2003, 2008) which includes the onshore portion of the Cabo Frio High, a mainly offshore feature that separates the Campos and Santos Basins. The Cabo Frio Terrane (CFT) forms the basement of these basins, and is composed of mainly Paleoproterozoic orthogneisses (Região dos Lagos) with minor portions of Neoproterozoic high grade metasediments (Búzios Gneisses) (Heilbron et al. 1982, 2000a, 2003; Zimbres et al., 1990, Fonseca, 1993; Viana et al., 2008; Schmitt et al., 2012; Almeida et al., 2012). These rocks underwent ductile deformation and metamorphism during the last collisional-accretionary event of the Brasiliano orogenic cycle, the Búzios orogeny at ca 530-500 Ma (Schmitt et al. 2004 & 2008a). This orogenic cycle lead to the final assembly of the Gondwana Supercontinent and, in this segment, was responsible for the collage of São Francisco and Angola cratons and the closure of Adamastor Ocean, leading to the formation of Ribeira belt.

We will discuss the extent of reactivation of these basement structures during later extensional events from the Eocretaceous rifting (Atlantic rift) with associated intrusion of tholeiitic dykes (ca. 130Ma), and the Cenozoic development of the Continental Rift of Southeast Brazil and alkaline magmatism (between 70-50Ma). These brittle tectonic events are represented in outcrop by faults, fracture zones, tholeiitic dykes and alkaline intrusions. The evolution of the Cabo Frio High will be discussed within the context of the break-up of Gondwana.

Tem experiência na área de Geociências, com ênfase em Prospecção Mineral de ouro, cobre e pedras preciosas, Geologia Regional e Cartografia Geológica em Australia, Tanzania, Namíbia e Brasil. Graduated in Geology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1984), Master degree in Geology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1992). Completed PhD in Geosciences (Regional Geologt=y) at the Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) and Mainz Universitaet, Germany (2000). Following a 4 year period (1984-1988) at the Geological Survey of Brazil (CPRM) between working on several projects of geological mapping and mineral resources, Julio started as a lecturer and researcher at the Geology faculty of the Rio de Janeiro State University (FGEL-UERJ). Currently holds the position of Associate Professor and since July 2016 has occupied the position of Coordinator of the Post-graduate program in Basin Analysis and Fold Belt Studies of the FGEL-UERJ. Undertakes research in the areas of Structural Geology, Regional Geology and cartography and specializes in ductile shear zones. Current research interests include brittle deformation and the tectonics of emplacement of igneous bodies. As head of two labs, LET- Tectonics Studies Lab and LADE- Experimental Deformation Lab, Julio is working on the geological mapping and structural evolution of Precambrian terranes and Palaeozoic to Mesozoic basins. Actively collaborating with Brazilian and international researchers working on correlating the South Atlantic Conjugate Margin
